From the first paragraph, this book had me hooked! Hilarious, engrossing, enjoyable, romantic… And that was only the first page! Luckily the rest of the book didn’t disappoint.

  Multiple parts of the story had me laughing out loud – even in situations where laughter shouldn’t be possible – while others had me cringing in pain or embarrassment for the characters.

   Emma is a fantastic heroine, funny, sharp, and self-deprecating, while Guy perfectly embodies all that a god should be. Their chemistry is off the charts, and the tension between them can at times be cut with a knife. What really makes them brilliant characters however, is how relatable they are. Sure, this is a light paranormal romance where the characters must save the world from total evil domination, but they still have time to argue and struggle to deal with crazy relatives.

  Of the crazy relations, Cimil definitely takes the cake. She’s 100% insane, speaking seriously one minute then complaining about clowns the next. Needless to say, she’s definitely one of my favourite characters. Of favourite characters, Guy has become one of my top 100 fictional boyfriends. Though he’s at times arrogant and overbearing, he always has Emma’s best interests at heart, and is so gorgeous you cannot help but forgive him for his mistakes.

  The plot twists come one right after the other, and while some of them aren’t hard to guess, others hit with the strength of a truck! The end of the book, for example, has a twist no one saw coming, and, painfully ends in a cliff-hanger.

  If you like light, funny, paranormal romances with a hint of serious and majorly gorgeous cliff-hangers, then this book is for you. (I give it 4/5 stars)

Playing For Keeps Review

Hey guys,
since Cassandra's going to be taking a bit of a break and reviewing mainly anime and manga, I am going to be a bit more present around here from now on, although I will be mainly reviewing books. :P I hope to have a new review up every weekend, and would love to hear what some of your favorite books are in the comments!

I started reading Playing for Keeps because it was a free read for my kindle, and I was bored. Man, I am so glad I picked it out! 

   Firstly, the characters - like the storyline - are hilarious and authentic. Haley and Jason's character and romantic development throughout the story is perfectly executed, and really a joy to read. All the characters are relatable, and what is great about many of them is that they could be anyone. R.L. Mathewson makes you believe that it’s possible to meet your own perfect match, just so long as you give them a chance.

  Her writing style is also unique, hilariously funny and engrossing. The dialogue is witty, and Jason’s obsession with food is at once hilarious and troubling. As someone who enjoys food, I loved reading a book that incorporated such a simple and everyday need into the broader story, as a comedic tool and an expression of character.

  The build-up of sexual tension is also fantastic, as neither character wants to admit it exists. While this adds to the humour, it also gives another layer to the story, and really has you involved in the romance. By the midway point I can pretty much guarantee that you will be rooting for Haley and Jason to just stop pussyfooting around and get together already!

  If I were to sum this book up in a sentence, I’d say that it is the perfect blend of romance and humour. Even if funny isn't really your thing, or you’re not too keen on romance, I'd still recommend this books as it is truly fabulous.

 Altogether I’d give it about 4 ½ stars out of 5.

Blogging Hiatus

With Summer 2013 in full swing already thought this was a good time to dive myself into completely doing some anime watching and then maybe a few anime reviews including reviews on my latest manga reading. If interested check out, The Huge Anime Fan. 

Book reviewing and more specifically book blogging is something need a break from. Just not so passionate about it these days. Just want to enjoy anime and manga and discover new content. Jesse as you know blogs too, here, and she may or may not continue to blog but I leave that in her hands.

            I don’t know if my situation is unusual, but the Legacy series didn’t start out as a series at all. (It also didn’t start out as Legacy—its original title was Wonderland). I just wanted to write a book about a young woman without any strong family ties to discover her long-lost blood relatives, and then find out that those relatives happen to be witches.

            I also wanted to dispel the notion that witches were evil. Those scary Rosemary’s Baby sort of Satanic witches that are so often featured in books and TV really annoy me. Unlike vampires, zombies, and ghosts, witches are totally, indisputably real. They’ve been around for at least a thousand years, and millions of them have been persecuted for their beliefs and talents.

            I’ve made the witches in Legacy a sort of potpourri of talent: Some of them can heal with a touch. Some can travel to distant places without leaving their houses. My character Katy can move objects with her mind. She can also “read” them to find out things about the people who once owned them. Katy’s boyfriend Peter (this is a hint for the next installment, tentatively titled Seduction) can make gold. Most of these talents (except for the gold-making) are real… that is, ordinary people who live among us have these abilities, whether or not these people call themselves witches.

            My point through all the Katy books—and I wish I could write a hundred of them—is that talent exists in all kinds of forms and in all kinds of places. Just because you’re not like everyone else doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with you. That’s the theme, really, of all the books in this series: Use the gifts you were born with. Don’t compare yourself with anyone else. And be proud of everything you are.

Review of Privateer’s Apprentice by Susan Verrico

Set in Charles Towne, Carolina Territory in 1712, Privateer's Apprentice tells the story of thirteen-year old Jameson Cooper, son of a printer, who has been thrown in jail after the death of both of his parents. While there are many adventure and Fantasy novels in libraries out right now, Privateer’s Apprentice, provides us with a story in the real world with no true Fantasy gimmicks. Verrico knows how to write in a heartfelt way and the storyline for Jameson an orphan becoming a Privateer’s Apprentice is full of awful danger and courage. The Captain is a character of mystery and his second-in-command in Solitaire Peep is just as illusionary. While the book itself is enjoyable in a nice pace it’s a story with a simple theme of growing up and looking to the future while always remembering and cherishing your past.

A wonderful cast of strange characters and adventure set in a historically fictitious world is what makes this book one to be embraced by anyone.

Overall: Amazing read!

My To Five Anime: No.1: Ah! My Goddess!

Let me just start off by saying that Ah! My Goddess! is my favorite anime and favorite manga  to date. It has kept this rank since the first time I watched an episode back in 2006.
There are so many things I love about this series. I love the artwork, I the dialogue, the romance, the general story line, and, most of all, I LOVE the characters.
It's quite ironic, as the story is meant to focus on Kiechi and Belldandy, yet my favorite characters are Urd and Hild. I will find myself reading the manga or watching my favorite episodes just for a glimpse of these hilarious characters.
 Urd is Belldandy's older half sister, and is half Goddess and half Demon.  I don't want to give too much away, but lets just say that this is a constant source of interest in the series, and always causes problems. I always find that the Urd centric parts of the series are the best as well. ;P
Hild is Urd's mother and (Spoiler alert!) the ruler of demons. She's like... A more insane version of Urd. Whenever she's around, trouble is sure to follow, as well as hilarity.
The main characters (Belldandy and Keichi) are good too, I just don't find them nearly as good as their demonic counterparts.
 They also have the most irritating romance of any book, movie, manga or anime I've ever seen. It's so frustrating, that my friends and I have found ourselves yelling at the screen or throwing our manga across the room. Seriously. It's great though, because it really keeps you reading/watching, hoping to finally, finally, see them break out of their "kindergarten level romance" and into something more.
 The other main supporting characters are Skuld, Urd and Belldandy's kid sister, Megumi, Kiechi's younger sister and Mara, a demon who is constantly trying to get to the goddesses, and is also used as comic relief.
  What I love about this series, is that the supporting characters really make the story. Great main characters are good, I mean, just look at the success of Twilight! (take that how you will), but when a main hero/heroin can go to their sister/brother/friend and that character can truly make a contribution to the story, that's what I want to see.
 The way the novel progresses isn't like in a book where the entire series is leading up to one cataclysmic event. Instead there are a lot of little, "major" events that make up the story.
 There are two seasons of Ah! My Goddess and I still hold out hope that a third will be made. It's just that good.
 Seriously guys, go watch this!

Awaiting Hope's Reign by Selina Fenech...meanwhile Video

Hope's Reign (Memory's Wake #2) by Selina Fenech really is a book that is taking time to be released. Since read Memory's Wake book can't help to strain at reading the second book. Anime and Manga Fan discovery of All Otaku e-Magazine

If you're a fanatic anime and manga fan you're going to want to know about the latest in anime and manga. Magazines are a great way to go but as any anime and manga fan knows just trying to keep up with an anime and manga always lifestyle can be expensive! There is one magazine that doesn't cost you and has fascinating writing too.

While wandering the internet this past March came across a magazine online named All Otaku centered around South Africa. I for one didn't know anime even existed in South Africa! Well it does and the same conclusion I came to is the very reason for All Otaku. A need to spread the passion and pursue of anime/manga fandom there for more awareness.
